Lloyd Carr and Al Glick

The Glick family has been here from the very beginning.

In 2011, long-time athletics donor Al Glick surprised Coach Lloyd Carr by naming the Coach Carr Pediatric Cancer Unit at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in his honor.

“Lloyd has spent so much time at Mott Hospital and is well deserving of this honor, as well as the College Football Hall of Fame induction,” said Al Glick, co-founder of Alro Steel who passed away in 2022. “Our family is proud to honor Lloyd in this way for both his passion for C.S. Mott Hospital and Michigan football.”

In a painful irony, on September 23, 2014, Coach Carr’s grandson, Chad, would be diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) in the pediatric cancer unit dedicated to Coach Carr.

The Alvin L. Glick Foundation looks for opportunities to make the most impact within their communities. They focus on supporting and enhancing youth programs, helping the underprivileged, and improving children’s health.

Tammi Carr and Al Glick

“From day one of the foundation they asked how they could help.” said Tammi Carr. “They were one of our biggest donors up front to both the foundation as well as to the initiative at Michigan.”

When ChadTough was established in 2015, it was important to the Carr family that the Glicks have an influential role as well. Randy Glick, current CEO and Chairman of the Board for Alro Steel and son of Al, was named to the foundation’s board of directors.

“When they asked me to be on the board, I didn’t think twice,” said Randy Glick. “It’s special to be involved and exciting to see that the foundation is sparking real change with DIPG. The money we’re raising is doing what it’s supposed to be doing. It’s rare to see doctors excited about research, but they’re excited about this.”
